Every October, I start hearing the same thing from customers. "My skin feels tight and products I trust suddenly sting." In almost every case, the skin barrier needs a little more support.
After more than 30 years as an esthetician, I have learned that this is the time of year when skin changes its needs. Here is how I adjust my own Eminence Organics routine for the season, and the Eminence skin care I recommend to customers across Canada.
What Your Skin Barrier Actually Does
I like to describe the barrier as a brick wall. Your skin cells are the bricks and the natural lipids between them are the mortar. When that wall is intact, it holds water in and keeps irritants out.
When the mortar thins, two things happen at once:
Water escapes more easily, so skin feels tight and looks dull.
Irritants get in more easily, so skin becomes reactive.
That is why a stressed barrier so often shows up as a mix of dryness, flaking, redness and stinging, even in people who would never describe their skin as sensitive.
Why October Is the Turning Point
Outdoor humidity drops. Indoor heating dries the air further. Showers get longer and hotter, and wind and cold mornings add their own stress.
There is also a habit I see every year. Many of us are still exfoliating and cleansing the way we did in July, when skin was producing more oil and recovering faster. A routine that feels perfect in summer can quietly wear the barrier down within a few weeks. If you exfoliated three times a week in summer, try once or twice a week now and see how your skin responds.
The signs to watch for:
-
Tightness within a few minutes of cleansing
-
Flaking around the nose, brows, or chin
-
Makeup that clings to dry patches
-
Redness or warmth after applying products you normally tolerate well
My Fall Barrier Routine, Step by Step
This is the simple structure I return to every autumn: cleanse gently, add water, add a little oil, then seal it all in. Each step helps the next one work better.
Step 1: Cleanse Without Stripping
The Eminence Organics Stone Crop Cleansing Oil is the cleanser I reach for most once the weather turns. Many people assume an oil cleanser will feel heavy, but this one is light and non-greasy. It removes makeup and impurities while leaving skin feeling soft and moisturized, never tight. Sunflower oil soothes dry skin, jojoba oil hydrates, and stone crop helps reduce the look of redness that comes with dryness.
Massage a small amount into your face and neck, then add a little water to emulsify before rinsing. Use lukewarm water, never hot. It is one of the smallest changes you can make, and one of the most effective.
Step 2: Hydrate on Damp Skin
Next, I reach for the Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum. Its botanical hyaluronic acid complex pairs multi-weight hyaluronic acid with marshmallow root to draw moisture into the skin and hold it there. Cica adds soothing hydration and helps strengthen the moisture barrier.
The key is to apply it while your skin is still slightly damp from cleansing. Hyaluronic acid works best when it has water to hold onto.
Step 3: Add a Few Drops of Oil
This is the step I add in October that I often skip in summer. The Eminence Organics Facial Recovery Oil has been one of my favourites for years. It is suitable for all skin types. Olive oil hydrates and soothes, and clary sage calms the skin and helps balance oil production.
Massage two or three drops into your face and neck using upward, circular motions. If a full layer of oil feels like too much, blend a single drop into your moisturizer instead. You get comfort without any added weight.
Step 4: Seal It In

Finally, a moisturizer holds everything in place. For normal to dry skin, the Eminence Organics Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer is a beautiful fall choice. Shea butter replenishes the skin's moisture barrier, while coconut oil and coconut water bring antioxidants and moisture.
It adapts to your skin, too. On milder days, emulsify a small amount with a few drops of water for a lighter finish. On cold, windy days, apply a thicker layer to the areas that feel driest.
Building a Routine That Fits Your Skin
The routine above is a starting point, not a prescription. If your skin leans oily, you may prefer the oil blended into your moisturizer rather than on its own. If you are very dry, you may want a richer night cream.
Whatever you choose, introduce one new product at a time. When skin is reactive, changing several things at once makes it hard to know what is helping. And be patient. A barrier does not rebuild overnight, so give a consistent routine a few weeks before deciding whether it is working.
Our Skincare Quiz works as a simple skincare routine builder, and if you would like my personal recommendations, you can always book a skincare consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best Eminence Organics products for a compromised skin barrier?
I build my fall barrier routine around four Eminence Organics products: the Stone Crop Cleansing Oil, the Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum, the Facial Recovery Oil, and the Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer. Together they cleanse gently, add water, add nourishment, and seal it all in. If your skin is very reactive, start with the cleanser and moisturizer, then add the other two gradually.
How do I know if my skin barrier is damaged?
The most common signs are tightness after cleansing, flaking, dry patches that makeup clings to, and redness or stinging from products that never bothered you before. These often appear together in the fall as humidity drops and indoor heating comes on.
Is Eminence skin care suitable for sensitive skin in the fall?
Yes. Many Eminence skin care formulas are well suited to sensitive skin. The Stone Crop Cleansing Oil, for example, is designed for even the most sensitive complexions. When your skin is reactive, introduce one new product at a time so you can see how it responds.
Should I stop exfoliating in the fall?
You do not need to stop entirely, but most people benefit from exfoliating less often in autumn. If your skin feels tight or stings after exfoliating, reduce to once a week until it feels comfortable again.
Where can I buy Eminence Organics in Canada?
The Facial Room is Canada's #1 authorized Eminence Organics retailer, and I have worked with the brand for more than 26 years. Every order includes six complimentary samples, earns Glow Rewards points, and ships free across Canada on orders over $49.
How long does it take to repair the skin barrier?
It varies from person to person, but most people notice their skin feeling more comfortable within a few weeks of a consistent, gentle routine. Stay consistent, keep your routine simple, and resist the urge to switch products too often.
