Why you need to add a chemical peel to your skincare routine

Posted by Patricia Asmar on

If you're looking for a way to reveal smoother, brighter and younger-looking skin, adding a chemical peel to your skincare routine is a must!

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a type of exfoliating treatment that involves applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the top layer of dead skin cells to peel away. This reveals the new skin underneath, which is smoother, brighter and more even in tone. Chemical peels come in different strengths and types, including glycolic acid peels, salicylic acid peels and lactic acid peels.

What is the Difference Between a Chemical Peel and Physical Exfoliator?

While both chemical peels and physical exfoliators are effective in removing dead skin cells, there are some key differences between the two. Physical exfoliators use abrasive particles, such as beads or granules, to physically remove the dead skin cells. Chemical peels, on the other hand, use chemicals to dissolve the bonds between the dead skin cells and the new skin underneath, allowing the dead skin cells to peel away. Chemical peels are generally gentler and less likely to cause irritation compared to physical exfoliators.

How Often Should You Use a Chemical Peel?

The frequency with which you use a chemical peel depends on the strength of the peel and your skin type. Mild peels can be used once or twice a week, while stronger peels may only be used once or twice a month. It's important to follow the instructions on the product and to not over-exfoliate, as this can cause irritation and damage to the skin.

How to Perform a Chemical Peel at Home?

Performing a chemical peel at home is simple and easy with the right supplies and instructions. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Collect your skincare products, including a cleanser, toner, and any moisturizer, serum, facial oil, concentrate or eye cream you use.
  1. Cleanse your face with lukewarm water and a small amount of cleanser. Massage the cleanser in a circular motion for 15-30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water.
  1. Apply a toner or tonique to a thin cotton pad and gently swipe over your face.
  1. Apply your at-home chemical peel to your cleansed and toned skin. Dispense one to two pumps of the solution on one of the dual-textured cotton round pads provided. Apply in circular motions covering the face and neck, avoiding the eye area and leave on.
